It is a very important religious holiday. Passion plays (recreating Jesus crucifixion) take place all over the country and there are solemn religious processions in which statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary are carried through town. Catholic Christianity is the predominant religion in Mexico,so this religious holiday takes on a special meaning to the entire community.
